Amethyst is quartz — silicon dioxide — colored by iron impurities and millions of years of natural irradiation inside volcanic rock cavities. Silica-rich fluids seep in, cool slowly, and crystallize over geological time. Its color is literally the result of the Earth bombarding it with energy. Clarity, it turns out, takes a long time and a lot of invisible force.
